Charles Baldwin's only basket of the night was pure gold. The Oklahoma Christian University freshman hit an eight-foot jumper in the final second to give the Eagles a 75-73 win over Southern Nazarene University here March 4.
Tied up 73-73 after a free shot by SNU's Batiste Haywood with 14 seconds to play, OC guard Brady Page drove the middle in heavy traffic. The ball was deflected backward and the trailing Baldwin grabbed the ball and hit the game winner.
The victory was well earned as the Eagles came from behind five times in the second half, tying at 64-64 with 5:44 left only to trail again, 70-72, with 1:29 remaining.
Jarred Merrill, who led all scorers with 34 points, canned a three-pointer from the corner at 1:17 to put the Eagles on top 73-72. After an exchange of possessions, Haywood's' free throw at :14 seconds tied it up but Baldwin had the last shot and made it count. A desparation shot by the Crimson Storm was wide from the basket.
The victory raises the Eagles' season record to 18-11 and leaves OC tied with Southern Nazarene, now 21-10, with an 8-10 conference standing. Oklahoma Christian swept the season series with SNU, and the Eagles will be seeded sixth in the conference tournament.
The Eagles trailed 39-41 at halftime but Merrill and Page led a run to take their first lead of the second half 50-49 at 14:38. Freshman Keith Harris contributed some key baskets and after a tie at 64-64, Merrill and Page shot the Eagles to a 70-67 lead at 4:04.
Manuel Narvaez scored five straight points to put SNU up 72-70 but Merrill countered with the clutch three-pointer from the corner for a 73-72 OC lead. Haywood's free shot tied it up for SNU but Baldwin's shot put it away.
Page finished with 18 points and Harris had 13. Sam Word had eight points and four assists. Narvaez was the leader for SNU with 23 points and 19 rebounds.
