Freshman Carley Cave scored her first career goal in OC's 1-1 tie with Wayland Baptist.

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 29, 2011) – Carley Cave's first career goal allowed Oklahoma Christian to salvage a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon with Wayland Baptist, keeping alive the Lady Eagles' hopes of making the Sooner Athletic Conference's women's soccer tournament.

With one regular-season game remaining, OC (5-10-2, 2-6-2 SAC) sits in ninth place, one spot out of the conference tournament. The Lady Eagles have 8 points, two behind eighth-place Lubbock Christian. To qualify for the tournament, OC will need to beat Northwestern Oklahoma State at home Tuesday and hope Wayland Baptist (6-10-1, 1-8-1) can upset Lubbock Christian.

If not for Cave and goalkeeper Chelsie Flagg, OC wouldn't have that chance. Flagg made a season-high 12 saves as Wayland Baptist outshot the Lady Eagles 25-15.

With a fierce south wind at their backs, the Pioneers went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute. OC failed to clear a loose ball out of its own penalty box and the Pioneers got off three shots. Flagg blocked two of them but couldn't stop the third, by Jordan James. James scored her sixth goal of the season and Zoe Benson was credited with the assist.

Cave, a freshman used mostly as a defender or defensive midfielder this season, started as an attacking midfielder against Wayland Baptist and recorded her first three career shots, all of them on goal. In the 73rd minute, she took a pass from Rachel Bates and fired left-to-right from about 15 yards out past Wayland Baptist goalkeeper Courtney Chambers.

"Carley pushed up and attacked really well today," OC coach Randall Robison said. "That was a really nice goal."

The Pioneers outshot OC 6-2 during the two overtime periods, but Flagg kept them at bay, making four of her saves in extra time.

Chambers made eight saves for the Pioneers.
