Angela Pete, shown here earlier this season in a game against Southwestern Oklahoma State, scored both goals for Oklahoma Christian in a 2-0 win over Bacone on Thursday.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 8, 2011) – Angela Pete scored two goals, both off assists from Marieka Bauer, leading Oklahoma Christian to a 2-0 win over Bacone on Thursday night.
With the win, Oklahoma Christian (2-1) equaled its win total from last season and gained momentum heading into a key early season stretch. The Lady Eagles will play their next three games away from home, a run to be capped by a game at last season's national runner-up, Hastings (Neb.).
OC posted a narrow 17-16 edge in shots against Bacone (1-2), but the Lady Eagles made the most of two of their chances. Pete's first goal, at the 8:41 mark, came on a one-on-one opportunity against Bacone goalkeeper Veronica Helguera, a play set up after Bauer dropped off a pass to Pete.
In the 60th minute, Bauer and Pete teamed up again. Bauer sent a perfect pass forward to Pete, whose shot from about 12 yards out left Helguera defenseless.
Pete, who raised her career goal-scoring total to five, also got back on defense, thwarting a late Bacone scoring chance by clearing away the ball deep in her own end.
"When she plays, she can play," OC coach Randall Robison said.
Chelsie Flagg started in goal for the Lady Eagles and recorded four saves before giving way to freshman Kaityln Whitten at halftime. Whitten, seeing her first collegiate action, had one save and stopped at least three other Bacone scoring opportunities by snaring or knocking away crossing passes or corner kicks.
Demi Barai led Bacone offensively, taking six of the Warriors' 16 shots. Helguera recorded seven saves for Bacone.
