OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Nov. 2, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian men's soccer team played to a 3-2 overtime victory against John Brown University (Ark.) on Tuesday night to earn a spot in the conference tournament while the Lady Eagles yielded a 2-1 overtime defeat.
The women's game saw a well matched first period, as neither team was able to find the goal before halftime in an offensive stalemate. The Lady Eagles kept the Lady Golden Eagles at bay despite their eight shots during the period.
Minutes into the second period, the Lady Eagles' Angela Pete found the back of the net to give OC a 1-0 advantage. Just over a minute later, however, John Brown's Camille Malkiewicz sent one into the OC net to tie things up at 1-1.
The Lady Eagles struggled to get shots off during the second period as they managed two for the half. Unable to respond and take the lead before the end of regulation, the Lady Eagles entered into overtime.
Midway through the 10-minute period, the JBU women's Sarah Kidd found the OC goal to end the game and take the 2-1 sudden death victory.
Being the final game for the OC women, the loss leaves the Lady Eagles at 2-13-2 for the season with a 1-9-1 record for the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The OC men took to the field with intensity as they fought for a place in the conference tournament and a win against John Brown would provide just that.
Early in the first period, senior Tyler Brady fired an assist from Tommy Guernsey straight into the back of the net to get the Eagles rolling with a 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, JBU's Ramon Martinez responded with a goal to tie the game at 1-1.
A moment later, Brady again found the JBU net after powering the ball from outside the 18 to regain the lead at 2-1 for the Eagles. The OC men finished out the period carrying the 2-1 lead into the half.
The second period saw a JBU team desperate to score as they made several close opportunities at the OC goal. The Eagles held a firm defense through the period including a blocked goal by Cion Samuel to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless until just 30 seconds remained in regulation.
A last minute goal by JBU's Giovanni Gomez put the score at a 2-2 tie to send the game into overtime.
With the SAC tournament still on their mind, the Eagles did not let the tie-up get them down. Just over two minutes into the overtime period, OC's Trey Boykin utilized an assist from Tom Tippeconnic to blast a goal off the post to give the Eagles a win and a spot in the conference tournament.
The 3-2 victory leaves the Eagles with a 5-12 regular season record and at 5-5 for the SAC.
The OC men will play the first round of the conference tournament on Friday with the game time and opponent to be determined.
