Wertz scores but OC falls 2-1 at Texas-Permian Basin

ODESSA, Texas (Oct. 4, 2012) – Katie Wertz scored her second goal of the season but Oklahoma Christian couldn't climb out of an early hole and lost 2-1 on Thursday at Heartland Conference rival Texas-Permian Basin.

UTPB (1-9) snapped a 10-game losing streak, outshooting OC 8-7. The Falcons jumped to a 2-0 first-half lead and sent OC (1-8) to its eighth straight loss after a season-opening win over USAO.

UTPB scored in the 27th minute. Bria Smith-Porter sent a through ball to Alyssa Riddle, whose shot was deflected by OC goalkeeper Lindsey Williams but still went into the goal.

The Falcons made it 2-0 in the 36th minute, as Skylar Bluebird cleaned up a deflected shot by Jessica Saulter in front of the net.

Wertz pulled the Lady Eagles within 2-1 in the 38th minute. Chelsie Flagg passed to Wertz, who was on a breakaway on the right side of the field, and Wertz's shot into the lower left corner beat UTPB goalkeeper Jenna Easley. Flagg recorded her first career point on the play.

The Lady Eagles managed only two shots in the second half.

Williams went the distance in the goal and recorded four saves. Saulter was credited with three saves for the Falcons.

The Lady Eagles will play at another conference foe, McMurry (Texas), on Saturday at noon.
