Biography

Marketing major … Transfer from Kansas State who became an immediate ace for the Eagles … Right-hander who can throw fastball in the 90s … Figures to receive serious looks from pro scouts as the season progresses … Older brother of fellow OC pitcher Dylon Sturges … 2013: Played in 15 games (12 starts), going 5-6 with a 3.77 ERA and 53 strikeouts and 21 walks in 57 1/3 innings … Ranked second on the team in strikeouts and innings pitched … Threw two complete games, tying for the team lead … First OC start was a memorable one, as he allowed six hits and two runs (both earned) with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings against then-Division II No. 1-ranked St. Mary’s (Texas), keeping the Eagles in the game, although they eventually lost 3-2 in 11 innings … Took loss as OC fell 5-1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned)  in five innings … Made first relief appearance in eighth inning of 6-5 loss at Texas A&M International, allowing one hit but no runs in 2/3 of an inning … Recorded first win as OC beat York (Neb.) 4-3, going six innings and allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) … Pitching two scoreless innings in relief to get the win in a 5-4 victory over Tabor (Kan.) on March 4 … Started three days later and went the distance, allowing four hits and fanning six in a 13-2 win over McMurry (Texas) … Moved to 4-1 as OC beat Arkansas-Fort Smith 6-2, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing eight hits … Hard-luck loser in 1-0 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan after throwing a complete-game five-hitter and striking out a career-high nine batters … Exited the game with no outs in the third inning against St. Edward’s (Texas) after being hit in the head by a line drive and wasn’t involved in the decision as OC fell 2-1 … Allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) in five innings to take the loss as OC lost 8-3 at Texas-Permian Basin … Left game against Southern Nazarene due to arm discomfort after facing only two batters, but still took the loss as OC fell 10-2 … Started games on consecutive days in the NCCAA Central Region tournament against Ecclesia (Ark.) … On March 8, left game after two innings after Eagles amassed a 12-0 lead and didn’t figure into decision in 15-2 win … Started the regional title game the next day and allowed only one hit while striking out four in five innings, picking up the win as OC prevailed 5-1 … Was OC’s starter in its NCCAA World Series debut against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) … Gave up six hits and six runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings to take loss as OC fell 7-3 … 2012: At Kansas State, did not play due to injury … 2011: At Kansas State, played in 12 games (no starts), going 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 12 strikeouts and 11 walks in 13 1/3 innings … 2010: At Kansas State, played in 11 games (no starts), going 0-0 with 9.45 ERA and six strikeouts and four walks in 13 1/3 innings … Threw 2 2/3 innings against Oklahoma in the Big 12 tournament … Also threw 1 2/3 innings against both Minnesota and Texas, allowing no earned runs and just one hit combined in those two appearances … Teamed with two others to limit Chicago State to three hits, the Wildcats’ first combined three-hitter since 2007 … Previous school: Attended Edmond Santa Fe High School, where he played for current OC coach Lonny Cobble … Named as league most valuable player as a senior as Wolves reached the Class 6A title game … Received honorable mention on The Oklahoman’s All-State and Big All-City honor teams after going 5-1 as a senior in 2009 … Also competed in cross country and soccer.
