DALLAS, Texas – Oklahoma Christian men's soccer used a late goal from Kenzo Shabazz-Edwards to earn a 1-1 draw against DBU Saturday night at Patriot Soccer Field.
After falling behind midway through the second half, the Eagles continued to apply pressure before Shabazz-Edwards found the equalizer in the 85th minute. The draw moved Oklahoma Christian to 3-4-2 overall and 0-0-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
Neither side was able to break through during the opening 45 minutes. Oklahoma Christian generated six shots in the first half, including three from Shabazz-Edwards. His first opportunity came just over six minutes into the match, forcing DBU goalkeeper Hugo Herrera to make a save.
The match remained scoreless until the 73rd minute when DBU's Thomas Hayes scored off an assist from James Webb to give the Patriots a 1-0 advantage.
Oklahoma Christian responded by increasing its pressure on the DBU goal. Shabazz-Edwards forced another save in the 77th minute before Frederico Palacios put an attempt on goal in the 85th minute. Just seconds later, Manuel Mbumwae connected with Shabazz-Edwards, who found the back of the net at the 84:43 mark to even the match at 1-1. The goal was Shabazz-Edwards' fifth of the season.
The Eagles continued looking for the go-ahead goal in the closing minutes. Luis Alvis put a shot on target in the 88th minute, while Tyler Ackah-Wheatcroft had an attempt blocked with eight seconds remaining before the final whistle sounded.
Shabazz-Edwards led the Oklahoma Christian attack with five shots, three on goal and the Eagles' lone goal. Palacios added two shots, while Igor Caballero finished with three. Oklahoma Christian finished with 13 shots, including five on goal, and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Dante Caffaro played all 90 minutes for OC, allowing one goal and recording one save.
Oklahoma Christian leaves Dallas with its second consecutive draw in conference play and a 4-3-2 overall record.
The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday evening at Eagles Soccer Field, as they are set to host the Buffs of West Texas with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
