EDMOND, Okla. - Leading 5-4 in the top of the fifth,
Evan Ballast allowed just one more hit over the final three innings as Oklahoma Christian took game one of the four-game series with Lubbock Christian, 11-5, before falling in the second contest of the Thursday twin bill, 9-7.
Corbin Kwan (1-1) preceded Ballast's save with the his first win in an Eagles uniform, pitching the first four innings after allowing four runs, two of which were unearned, on five hits while striking out three LCU batters. Ballast then delivered a brilliant three innings where he faced just 11 batters, seeing two reach courtesy of a hit and a walk while retiring the other nine.
At the plate, OC rattled off 12 hits, with five Eagles claiming multiple hits.
Ruben Castro (2-for-4) used three RBI to go with his two hits, sending a three-RBI home run over the left field wall to open the maroon-and-gray's game-one lead, 11-5. On the afternoon, Castro went 3-for-7 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Oklahoma Christian (2-6, 2-6 LSC) will return to Dobson Baseball Field Friday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. for game three of the weekend series.
Game One: Oklahoma Christian 11, Lubbock Christian 5
Oklahoma Christian got after the Chaparrals quickly Thursday afternoon, plating five runs in the first two innings.
Hank Heiselbetz got the ball rolling with a lead-off double, yielding a two-run first frame before adding three more in the second thank to an
Elijah Laus two-RBI homer for the 5-0 lead after two.
Over the next two innings, Lubbock Christian got four of those runs back as LCU trailed just 5-4 when head coach
Lonny Cobble made the switch to Ballast. Immediately, the senior worked three-up, three-down, allowing Oklahoma Christian to add four runs in the home-half of the fifth for the 8-4 lead.
A single run off a sacrifice fly for LCU in the top of the sixth gave way to OC's fourth crooked number of the outing with Castro's three-run shot to give play its final tally, 11-5, as Ballast worked his second three-up, three-down inning to shut the door on the Chaparrals.
Game Two: Lubbock Christian 9, Oklahoma Christian 7
Oklahoma Christian got on the board first for the second time of the afternoon with a two-out RBI single from
Jontae Hennesy for the early 1-0 lead. This time, however, Lubbock responded with eight unanswered runs for the 8-1 advantage after four and a half innings.
A little two-out magic from the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth cut the LCU lead down to four, 8-4, before an insurance run from Lubbock put a five-run deficit against OC into the seventh frame. A two-out, three-RBI triple from pinch-hitter
Dylan Darnall brought the game-tying run to the plate, but a pop-out in foul territory allowed the Chaparalls to escape with the 9-7 game-two victory.Â
