Eagles Face Four Foes Along West Coast in Redwood Classic

EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian will compete in its second tournament of the young 2025 season when it heads west to Arcata, Calif. for the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic during which OC will play four matches in three days.

The Eagles will get the weekend going with tournament-host Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. PST/4 p.m. CT. Following a two-match day Friday, Sept. 12 against Jessup and Chico State at 11:30 a.m. PST/1:30 p.m. CT and 4:30 p.m. PST/6:30 p.m. CT, respectively, OC's final match will be against Dominican Saturday, Sept. 13 at 11:30 a.m. PST/1:30 p.m. CT

EAGLE OUTLOOK (3-0, 0-0 LSC)
Oklahoma Christian opened the year playing nine sets in three matches, sweeping its three opponents in the Midwestern State Invitational. For the weekend, OC hit .273 while holding its opponents to a .063 attack percentage. Aiding in the low attack percentage across the net was the Eagles' 2.4 blocks per set, which is currently second in the conference after opening weekend.

Leading the defense at the net is redshirt junior middle blocker Lauren Cary with a team-high 11 blocks and 1.22 rejections per set. Cary had a season-high five blocks in the opener against Southeastern Oklahoma State, of which OC won, 25-13, 25-18, 25-19. Fellow middle blocker Megan Rek made the most of her time on the floor, posting 1.25 blocks per set.

Offensively, Katy Geurin and Chloe Jones earned All-Tournament honors with 27 and 19 total kills, respectively, while Geurin hit .442 for the weekend. Jones also led the team with 33 digs across the three matches, followed by OC's third All-Tournament selection, true freshman libero Macey Nehring, who picked up 29 digs.

Oklahoma Christian will face all four teams this weekend for the first time ever as OC has never played in the Pacific Time zone, with its furthest trip west being Salt Lake City, Utah, for the Westminster Classic in 2023. The Eagles split that four-match trip with a five-set win over Westminster College and a four-set victory over Purdue-Northwest.

SCOUTING CAL POLY HUMBOLDT (0-4, 0-0 CCAA)
Cal Poly Humboldt plays as host this weekend, meeting Oklahoma Christian inside Lumberjack Arena, where Humboldt is 6-29 since the 2019 campaign. The Lumberjacks come into this weekend 0-4 after picking up just one set in the Hawai'i Challenge. While CPH only scored 20 in just two sets on the weekend, OC allowed just just one 20-point set on its opening weekend.

Cal Poly Humboldt's offense managed to hit only .080 across its four matches while allowing its opponents to hit .307. Leading their efficiency mark while also pacing them in assists is setter Brielle Wilson with a .412 attack percentage on 18 kills and 45 assists. Kills leader Graysen Trupp (22) is seeing a .090 attack percentage.

SCOUTING JESSUP (1-0, 0-0 PacWest)
Jessup comes into the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic riding a 1-0 record after pulling a reverse sweep against new NCAA Division II member UC Merced. After falling behind 2-0, including a 25-8 second set, the Warriors rallied with a third-set victory followed by a marathon fourth set that saw Jessup come out on top, 28-26, before pulling the stunner with a 15-12 final set.

For the match, Jessup was outhit by UC Merced, .203 to .141, but bested the Bobcats in sets three, four and five, .192 to .126. Senior Eliana Sheridan led the offense for the Warriors with 14 kills on a .178 attack percentage. Junior middle blocker Megan Conway played just four sets but made the most of her opportunities with eight kills while hitting .615.

SCOUTING CHICO STATE (1-2, 0-0 CCAA)
Chico State will bring its 1-2 record for its short trip out west where the Wildcats will face Oklahoma Christian in its second match of the tournament. Chico opened the 2025 season in Fresno, Calif., opening the year with a 3-0 sweep against Menlo before getting swept against Fresno Pacific and dropping a back-and-forth duel with Westmont in five sets.

The Wildcats' stats through three matches resemble that of their opponents, with CSU narrowly allowing more kills, 142 to 136, and being out-hit, .201 to .195. Defensively, Chico State has only managed 15 blocks for 1.4 rejections per set. On the offensive side of the ball, junior outside hitter Maria Wahl leads the way with 33 kills (3.30 k/s) while hitting .320.

SCOUTING DOMINICAN (0-4, 0-0 PacWest)
The Dominican Penguins will stand to be Oklahoma Christian's final opponent of the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic. The Penguins enter the weekend having dropped all four contests at the Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif. to open the 2025 season, despite having claimed at least one set in every match, including taking two against tournament-host CSU Monterey Bay.

The Penguins are allowing their opponents to hit .266 through four matches. While respectable at the net with 28 total blocks and 1.6 rejections per set, Dominican has posted just 13.5 digs per set. For comparison, such a mark would rank 17th out of 19 in the Lone Star Conference. Freshman defensive specialist Sophia Bernabe will be relied on to lead the defense as the Vallejo, Calif., native delivered a pair of 20-dig performances on opening weekend.
