Baseball Holds Late Leads Against No. 7 Patriots Before Falling in Twin Bill

EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian led No. 7 UT Tyler after six innings in game one and five innings in game two of Thursday's doubleheader, but in both instances fell against the Patriots, 13-9 and 8-5.

Jontae Hennesy (4-for-7) was the lone Eagle to claim multiple hits in both games while Trey Migl led the way at the plate for OC in game one with a 3-for-4 showing, including two home runs, with two RBI and two runs scored in the outing.

Along with Migl, Cason Gregory recorded two home runs in the day's opener as the maroon-and-gray claimed five home runs to Tyler's six. Both OC and UTT saw 18 combined hits in the twin bill, with the Eagles out-hitting the Patriots in game one, 11-9.

Game-two starting pitcher Tristan Copeland was terrific despite the loss, throwing seven strikeouts without allowing a walk. Copeland retired the first nine Patriot batters in order before allowing his first run of the game in the fourth inning.

Game One: No. 7 UT Tyler 13, Oklahoma Christian 9
  • UT Tyler recorded three home runs in the first three innings to open a 5-1 lead, while OC had seen just one hit up to that point.
  • Sam Collins entered the game in relief for starter Evan Ballast in the fourth, claiming his first three outs with the first three batters he faced. Oklahoma Christian took Collins' cue and proceeded to score six runs in the bottom of the fourth with Gregory's first homer of the afternoon giving the Eagles the lead, 7-5.
  • After Tyler quickly tied things up at 7-7 in the fifth, UTT retook the lead in the sixth on a solo home run, 8-7. Gregory and Migl followed suit with their own solo shots to go up 9-8 and within three outs of pulling the top-10 upset.
  • The Patriots delivered their fifth home run of the game with the first batter OC saw in the top of the seventh to tie the score before a grand slam later in the frame put the lead out of reach for the Eagles, 13-9.
Game Two: No. 7 UT Tyler 8, Oklahoma Christian 5
  • Neither team saw more than a single hit through the first two and a half innings. Oklahoma Christian opened the scoring with a single run on a Hennesy RBI-single in the bottom of the third for the one-run head start.
  • Two hits scored two runs for UTT in the fourth to give the Patriots their first lead of the game, 2-1. That lead was maintained until Jones came to the plate and delivered the first home run the Patriots' Julio Garcia had allowed all season to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
  • As it was with OC's first lead, the advantage was short-lived as UT Tyler used a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to regain a 4-3 advantage, which led to an eventual 8-3 lead after the six-run frame.
  • Migl recorded his third and fourth RBI of the day to get two runs back for the maroon-and-gray in the home-half of the sixth, but the Patriots' late-game pitching held off any kind of seventh-inning rally.
