ODESSA, Texas - Oklahoma Christian scored 16 runs on 18 hits in the series opener against Texas Permian Basin Friday afternoon as OC defeated UTPB in just seven innings, 16-1, for the maroon-and-gray's first win in Odessa since 2016.
David Brown (1-0) made just his third start of the season while picking up his first win on the mound after going all seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out three Falcons. Brown's start-to-finish outing marked the maroon-and-gray's first complete game from a pitcher this season.
While Brown held Permian Basin at bay all game long,
Trey Migl (4-for-4) and
Elijah Laus (4-for-5) combined for eight of Oklahoma Christian's 18 hits.
Hunter Jones (2-for-5) and
Michael Adair (3-for-4) did the most damage on the scoreboard, with the duo delivering three RBI each.
How it happened
- Oklahoma Christian brought a base runner to second in both of the first innings, but finally broke through in the third with an Adair two-RBI-single for the early 2-0 lead.
- After allowing three of Permian Basin's seven total hits in the first two innings, Brown and the Eagles' defense retired 12 of the next 13 UTPB batters. During the shutout effort, OC opened an 11-0 lead thanks to four-run fourth inning and five-run sixth.
- Just within run-rule territory, Oklahoma Christian moved the game safely into such a space with five more runs in the top of the seventh. The Eagles added the final three runs on two outs for the commanding 16-0 lead before UTPB survived the shutout with a single run in the bottom of the seventh.
