Baseball Edged by One Run Despite Early Lead Versus ENMU

PORTALES, N.M. - Oklahoma Christian held a 4-0 lead after four and a half innings, but seven of the next nine runs came from Eastern New Mexico as OC fell to ENMU Friday night, 7-6.

David Brown saw his first start of the season, earning a no-decision with 4.2 innings of work, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four Greyhounds. Brown's first four innings yielded zero runs and just three hits before Eastern got its offense going in the fifth frame.

Grant Voss (2-for-4) and Jontae Hennesy (2-for-3) each reached base four times with two walks a piece, while Elijah Laus led the Eagles at the plate with three hits for two RBI.

The Eagles out-hit Eastern New Mexico, 13-12, while issuing just two walks compared to eight for ENMU, but left 13 runners on base with at least one runner in each inning of play Friday night.

How it happened
  • The score remained tied 0-0 after four innings of play with Oklahoma Christian seeing four hits compared to three for Eastern New Mexico during that time. Back-to-back singles from Trey Migl and Hennesy led to a four-run fifth for OC, three of which came with two outs against the maroon-and-gray.
  • The home-half of the fifth was ENMU's time to work some two-out magic, recording five of its six runs on two outs for the Greyhounds' first lead of the series opener, 6-4.
  • The lead was short-lived for Eastern as OC immediately plated two more runs in the sixth. The Greyhounds snatched the lead back, however, in the bottom of the sixth with a lead-off triple leading to the go-ahead run.
  • Each of the next three lead-off batters for OC reached base safely, but double plays in the seventh and eighth inning from ENMU kept the Eagles at bay. The game-tying run from Oklahoma Christian was tagged out at home in the ninth frame as Eastern New Mexico took the game-one win, 7-6.
