Eagles Hang Tight with No. 2 ASU Before Falling, 5-2 and 2-0

EDMOND, Okla. - Five runs was the total difference in Sunday's doubleheader between Oklahoma Christian and No. 2 Angelo State as the Rams prevailed in both games, 5-2 and 2-0.

Cason Gregory recorded his first home run in an Eagle uniform in game one, closing the day as OC's hits leader with 14 hits and a .400 batting average through the young season. Gregory, Trey Migl, Elijah Laus and Justin Spencer each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

Tristan Copeland (0-2) recorded his third consecutive outing with at least eight strikeouts. After allowing two runs on two hits in the first inning, Copeland gave up just three more hits in his remaining 5.2 innings of scoreless work. On the season, Copeland has 35 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work with 10 hits and seven earned runs.

Oklahoma Christian (2-9, 2-9 LSC) will return to Dobson Baseball Field Monday, Feb. 24 for the series-finale at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: No. 2 Angelo State 5, Oklahoma Christian 2
  • Oklahoma Christian put at least one runner on base in four of its first five innings, yet it was forced to strand all Eagles, unable to bring a run across the plate to fall behind 3-0 after five frames.
  • The Rams added its two final runs in the sixth to send OC into the final half-inning trailing 5-0.
  • Migl led off the Eagles' final chance with a walk before Gregory recorded his inaugural maroon-and-gray home run before a Laus single had the game-tying run sitting on deck with two outs still to play with. Unfortunately, each of the next two OC at-bats resulted in an out to finish the game, 5-2.

GAME TWO: No. 2 Angelo State 2, Oklahoma Christian 0
  • Both starting pitchers combined to pitch 17 strikeouts in the game-two pitcher's dual. After a two-run first inning off two hits for ASU, the Rams were held hitless over the next four innings while OC claimed two base-knocks over the same stretch, yet with no runs to show for it.
  • Three hits from Angelo in the final two innings were brought to naught with OC's pitching and defense. However, Oklahoma Christian's final six batters were retired in order to finish off game two.
