GULF SHORES, Ala. - No. 24 Oklahoma Christian returned to the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for day two of the Gulf Shores Invitational, splitting the day's pair of contests. The Eagles dropped the morning's portion against Montevallo, 3-2, before getting after Valdosta State, 7-1.
Grace Anderson and
Kallie Rupp each claimed hits in both games, with Anderson also getting the win in the circle against Valdosta after going six innings for eight strikeouts to just one walk, allowing seven hits and one earned run.
Sophomore Rupp logged her second career multi-hit game with a 2-for-2 day at the plate against VSU while coming across the plate for two runs. The Morrison, Okla. native
(Morrison HS) got on base three times on the afternoon with a walk and recorded one RBI.
Oklahoma Christian (2-1, 0-0 LSC) will face (RV) Nova Southeastern in OC's final game of the weekend Sunday, Feb. 2 at 9:30 a.m. before returning to the Sooner State.
GAME ONE: Montevallo 3, No. 24 Oklahoma Christian 2 (8 inn.)
Oklahoma Christian displayed a bend-don't-break defensive mentality after giving up six hits through the first three innings, yet kept Montevallo scoreless until the fourth inning. The Falcons were able to plate two runs in the fourth, though were forced to leave two runners stranded.
The Eagle offense struggled to get much going, managing just one hit in six innings. But with one out left to spare,
Kate Paulsen brought in two runs with a two-out double to tie it up, 2-2. The Falcons managed to bring the game-winning run to second, but true freshman pitcher
Payten Schibbelhute struck out the final batter to force extra innings.
Oklahoma Christian tried to carry the late momentum over, but stranded a girl at third in the eighth frame before MU used a walk-off sacrifice fly in the home-half of the eighth, 3-2.
GAME TWO: No. 24 Oklahoma Christian 7, Valdosta State 1
The Eagle offense got going much quicker in game two, recording five hits through the first three innings, all of which came in that third inning where OC claimed two runs off a
Marti Yaerger sacrifice fly and back-to-back singles from Anderson and
Maci George.
Anderson continued to hold the Blazers at bay as OC added to its lead with a single run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to open a 5-0 lead. Valdosta got its one run in the sixth before the Eagles capped things off with a two-hit, two-run home half, including freshman
Victoria Brazil's first collegiate home run.
