LUBBOCK, Texas - Both Oklahoma Christian and Lubbock Christian shot 42.9 percent from three-point range as well as hit all five of their first-half free-throws as one point separated both squads at the break, but a 34-19 second half allowed the Chapparals to prevail Thursday night, 67-51.
Playing without leading scorer
Keyondre Young, the Eagles were led by
Marco Foster and
Bryce Kennedy at 12 points a piece.
Nickolas Traylor and
Miles Gibson followed with seven points each while Traylor added a season-high eight rebounds.
The Eagles started fast inside the Rip Griffin Center, hitting their first three field-goals before the visitors raced out to a 9-0 lead. Oklahoma Christian's lead stayed between five and nine points before a
Tyrus Baynham pull-up jumper opened the largest lead of the game at the 6:05 mark of the first half, 30-19.
Over the next six minutes and some change, however, Oklahoma Christian went cold, making just one more field-goal over that time while LCU took advantage with a 14-2 run to close the half for its first lead of the game at intermission, 33-32. That momentum for the Chapparals carried over into the second half, scoring 17 of the first 19 points of the second half.
From the 5:46 mark of the first half to the 15:00 mark of the second, LCU outscored OC 31-4, turning an 11-point Eagle lead into a 16-point deficit. The game was decided in those near 11 minutes of game time as Oklahoma Christian was unable to get back to within single digits.
The Eagles (6-11, 3-9 LSC) will begin the journey back north to the Sooner State, but will make a pit stop in Wichita Falls to take on (RV) Midwestern State Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m.
