Eagles Split Doubleheader With Hilltoppers in an Offensive Onslaught

Oklahoma City, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian (7-26, 7-24) took on St. Edward's (14-17, 15-16) in a doubleheader at Dobson Field, high winds contributed to, two high scoring matchups.

Game 2

Through the bottom of the third, OC trailed SEU 4-0 thanks to a hot start behind the plate for the Hilltoppers.

Chris Jones came in in the top of the 4th to try and stop the bleeding. The junior pitcher put together a strong start, creating momentum for the Eagles.

OC would finally get things going behind the plate in the bottom of the 4th. Ethan Box drew the leadoff walk and was driven in shortly after on the Reed Carroll RBI triple that was hit deep off the center field wall. Justin Spencer followed it up with an RBI double to right field, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Greg Maskarinec drove in the Eagles' third run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The three-run inning cut the lead to one at 4-3 going into the fifth inning.

Thanks to another strong inning by Chris Jones, OC entered the bottom of the 5th with momentum and trailing by just 1 run.

Hank Heiselbetz represented the game-tying run after getting hit by the pitch. The sophomore right fielder would then advance to second on a hard hit, infield single by Sloan Laird. Both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. With runners on second and third, Hunter Jones came up big with a double down the left-field line resulting in two runs scored for the Eagles.

The Eagles led 5-4, but they weren't done yet. Ethan Box drew a walk and Reed Carroll approached the plate with runners on first and second; he delivered with the second double of the inning, scoring Jones. Box and Carroll would not be left stranded as Justin Spencer drove in the first of the two with a sacrifice fly to center field. Colby Ferris then scored the Eagles' final run, executing a beautiful squeeze play to score Carroll from third.

Two huge innings in the fourth and fifth put the Eagles up 8-4 and left little room for a comeback.

Reliever, Matthew Shira, earned his first save of the year holding SEU at 4 runs as the Eagles topped the Hilltoppers to open the doubleheader.

Game 3

Much like the start of the first game, St. Edward's came out hot behind the plate. The Hilltoppers were able to get out on top quick, loading the bases off walks and getting some timely hits. SEU led OC 10-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd.

Hank Heiselbetz and Sloan Laird were able to get things going for the Eagles with consecutive singles. Reed Carroll followed it up with a 2 RBI single of his own, driving in the Eagles first two runs.

The Eagles continued to chip away in the bottom of the 5th with back-to-back solo home runs by Sloan Laird and Hunter Jones. OC trailed 10-4.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth, Antonio Sabala added a home run of his own from the lead-off spot. After a Sloan Laird walk and Hunter Jones single, Ethan Box carried on the home run derby with a three-run bomb to left field. The Eagles trailed 10-8.

Despite OC's late comeback efforts, the Hilltoppers would go on to tack on three more runs and put the second game of the doubleheader away.
