EDMOND, Okla. -
Javon Grant and
Keyondre Young scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, in the second half Sunday afternoon as Oklahoma Christian opened the 2024-25 season with a 71-63 win over region foe Western Colorado.
Grant finished the contest with 20 points, which is the most points he has scored in an Eagle uniform.
Marco Foster followed Grant with 17 points in his return to the Payne Athletic Center, including hitting two of his four three-point field goal attempts.
It was home, sweet home for the former Eagle through the early going, contributing five of OC's first nine points. Between Foster's five and
Jason Clark's four, Oklahoma Christian opened the early 11-5 lead. The Mountaineers began to cut into the deficit, however, before using a 15-2 run to establish a 26-17 advantage.
The Eagles closed the gap before heading to the locker room trailing 33-28. Coming out of the break, it was newcomer Young's time to shine. After being held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, Young began to heat up, knocking down the first five second-half points for the Eagles, followed by a Foster put-back layup to cut the WCU lead to two less than three minutes into the period, 37-35.
Five more points from Young followed by a Foster and-1 put OC ahead at the 14:38 mark, 45-41. From there, Grant scored 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting while going to the free-throw line nine times over the final 14 minutes of game time to help the Eagles hold onto the lead for the rest of regulation.
Play saw one more tie, 49-49, before Oklahoma Christian mounted a 14-3 game-deciding run that put the home team in front by double digits, 63-52, prior to the final media timeout of the game. That lead continued until the clock struck zeros, 71-63.
Oklahoma Christian (1-0, 0-0 LSC) will hit the road for its next contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla., Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The Eagles will return back home Saturday, Nov. 16 for a 7 p.m. tip against Randall University.
