Bolivar, Missouri - Men's soccer (3-0) is off to their best start in their NCAA era after a 2-1 today against Southwest Baptist (0-3). And Danny Gutierrez kept his impressive start going with two goals against the Bearcats.
Â
The game got off to a hot start for the Eagles, as they applied constant pressure until they ultimately broke through in the 13th minute. Three minutes into the game
Louis Bassett hit the crossbar on back-to-back shots, and that started what would be a six-shot onslaught in the first 13 minutes. Bassett, would go on to assist Gutierrez's goal in the 13th minute with a beautiful pass into the box that Gutierrez buried off of one touch.
Â
Southwest Baptist (SBU) settled in and held off the Eagles' offense for the rest of the first half. SBU started the second half strong and tied the match in the 59th minute, but that didn't last long. A couple of minutes later, Gutierrez found himself with an open shot from the top of the box and sent a laser into the left side of the net. That goal would go on to be the deciding goal in a close game in Bolivar.
Â
"We are very happy to have won on the road in what was a challenging environment." coach Sowerby said after the game. "It's been a long time since OC has started the campaign 3-0 so we will definitely enjoy it."
Â
With his two goals tonight, Gutierrez has now scored more goals this season (6) than any freshman in our DII era. He is also tied for the most goals in a season by any player since Oklahoma Christian made the transition. These two goals are coming off a week in which he was the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week.Â
