OKLAHOMA CITY (July 4, 2022) –
Murray Evans, who has served as Oklahoma Christian's assistant athletic director for communications since August 2011, has resigned from that post in order to pursue other professional opportunities, he said Monday.
For his work in OC's athletic communications office, Evans, a 1989 OC graduate, has received more than two dozen awards from professional organizations including the College Sports Information Directors of America and the Society of Professional Journalists/Oklahoma Pro Chapter.
OC's athletic department has more than doubled in size since 2011 – from 12 teams with about 225 student-athletes to 24 teams with more than 460 student-athletes. Evans' responsibilities have grown during that time and include creating content for and maintaining the university's athletic website, producing news releases, serving as the official scorer and statistician for OC athletics, maintaining historical records for OC's 17 varsity and seven club sports, overseeing athletic social media accounts, handling award nominations, coordinating and serving on OC's Athletic Hall of Fame committee, answering media queries and coordinating game operations and video streaming at OC home athletic events.
Starting with the 2020-21 season, he became the national coordinator for the Division II Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) women's basketball poll, after serving as a national poll voter and regional poll coordinator the previous six seasons.
He also has served in recent years as a voter in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's weekly region poll and has helped choose the NCBWA's All-South Central Region team. Evans began serving on CoSIDA's Fred Stabley Jr. Writing Contest Committee in July 2019 and served as the vice chairman of the Lone Star Conference's sports information directors committee for the 2020-21 academic year before becoming the chairman for the 2021-22 academic year.
He served as the media room coordinator for the 2015 NCAA Division II Softball Championship, held at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium and OC's Tom Heath Field. Evans also has served as a class presenter on five occasions during the annual CoSIDA convention, most recently in 2018.
Evans returned to OC after spending more than 23 years as a journalist, including 13 years with
The Oklahoman and more than eight with The Associated Press in Lexington, Ky., and Oklahoma City.
"I have mostly enjoyed my time at OC, but at this time in my life, I need to put my family's needs first, which is something this job often does not allow because of the high volume of work that must be done," Evans said. "Thank you to all of my student workers and graduate assistants, and to the wonderful student-athletes who have passed through during these 11 years. It has been my privilege to record your accomplishments for posterity and share your stories. I hope I have been a blessing to you."
