Southeastern walks away in late innings to beat OC

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 26, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian pitchers walked eight batters and hit three others, and ultimately, all those free bases proved too much for the Eagles to overcome on Tuesday night against Southeastern Oklahoma State.

In OC's only home nonconference game of the baseball season – which happened to also be the regular-season finale – OC led by five runs, only to surrender 10 to the Savage Storm during the final three innings as the Eagles fell 11-8 at Dobson Field.

Southeastern (29-18), one of the Eagles' historical rivals from the early days of the program, completed a two-game season sweep of OC (21-29). OC now will wait for the results of this weekend's Lone Star Conference action to find out if they will qualify for the league tournament (which they likely will) and where they might be traveling on the first weekend of the postseason should the Eagles make the eight-team field.

The Savage Storm committed four errors and OC took advantage to build its early lead. Tanner White's double keyed a three-run fifth inning in which Southeastern had two errors and OC added two more runs in the sixth, one of those scoring on an error, to go ahead 6-1.

Southeastern sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs during the top of the seventh, against three OC pitchers. Four batters walked and two others were hit by pitches. Damon Burroughs hit a two-run single and Richard Ware followed with a two-run double that put the Savage Storm ahead 7-6.

Grant Lake's two-run homer in the bottom of the inning – his fourth longball in his last five games – gave OC the lead again at 8-7, but the Eagles managed only one more hit the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, two walks and an OC error led to three more Southeastern runs in the eighth inning and Matt Miles' single up the middle with two outs put the Savage Storm ahead 10-8. They added another run in the ninth, as Michael Bernhardt walked and scored on a triple by Angel Ochoa.

Dillon Bumgarner (1-1), the fifth of six Southeastern pitchers, picked up the win with one inning of relief while Jacob Potter earned his first save. OC used eight pitchers, with reliever Matthew Shira (4-2) taking the loss.
