RICHARDSON, Texas (April 15, 2022) – Five workers in Oklahoma Christian's athletic communications office has been recognized by the Lone Star Conference with its Sports Information Student Academic Award, the LSC announced Friday.
To receive the honor, a student must have at least a 3.30 grade-point average, have completed at least 24 credit hours at a LSC institution and be in good standing with that institution's athletic communications office.
Those recognized from OC included graduate assistants
Kregg Matthews and
Nehemiah Knox and undergraduate student workers Jhalen Blackburn, Andrew Evers and
Robert Gregg III. OC had more people receive the award than any other school in the LSC.
Workers in OC's athletic communications office handle a variety of duties, such as creating content for and maintaining the university's athletic website, handling athletic photography and video streaming services, maintaining historical records for OC's 24 varsity and club sports, overseeing athletic social media accounts and coordinating game operations and statistics at OC home athletic events.
Matthews, from Jefferson City, Mo., is working on a master's degree in Organizational Leadership. He is in his fifth year as a worker in the OC athletic communications office and handles much of the department's social media duties, in addition to statistical and game-operation work.
Knox, from Wylie, Texas, is in his fourth year in the department and is working on a master's degree in Marketing. He handles most of the video responsibilities for the athletic department.
Evers, a junior Elementary Education major from Lubbock, Texas, is in his third year in athletic communications office. Blackburn, a sophomore Psychology major from Mansfield, Texas, has worked in the office for two years while Gregg, a senior Sports Management major from Edmond, Okla., is in his first year of work in the office.
"I am incredibly proud of Jhalen, Andrew, Robert, Kregg and Nemo," said
Murray Evans, OC's assistant athletic director for communications. "Our office could not function without them. As our athletic department has grown and grown in recent years, we have asked more and more of our student workers and graduate assistants and they almost always come through for us.
"It is gratifying to me – but not surprising, knowing them like I do – that they put a similar quality of effort into their academic work. Our goal always is to aim toward earning a degree while developing life and professional skills, and hopefully have a fun experience along the way."
