GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 9, 2022) – When she stepped on the starting block on Wednesday morning at the Greensboro Aquatic Center,
Cheyenne Parks made a bit of Oklahoma Christian swimming history.
Parks swam in the first of five heats in the 200-yard individual medley, becoming the first OC swimmer – female or male – to compete at the NCAA Division II Championships in the five-season history of the Eagles' programs.
Parks, a sophomore from Guthrie, Okla., qualified for the national meet in three other events (the 400 IM, the 200 butterfly and the 200 backstroke) and thus earned the right to also compete in the 200 IM, in which she posted a NCAA B time standard during the season.
Her prelims time of 2:07.57 wasn't among the top 16 swimmers, who advanced to Wednesday's nights A and B finals in the event. The good news for Parks is that her best events await, starting with the 400 IM on Thursday.
"Today was a good warm-up for Cheyenne, to get the kinks out," OC coach
Josh Davis said. "It's her first time at nationals. This is the biggest meet she's ever been to. Cheyenne will get the 400 IM tomorrow and then the backstroke and butterfly, so she'll get better each day."
