DURANT, Okla. (March 29, 2022) – For seven innings, Oklahoma Christian looked to be cruising to the win in its first nonconference baseball game of the year, but weird things often have happened to the Eagles through the years at Southeastern Oklahoma State and they did so again Tuesday.
The Savage Storm took advantage of two OC errors to score three runs in the eighth inning, forced extra innings with a two-out run-scoring hit in the ninth and won the game 6-5 on a solo home run by Hayden Evans with one out in the bottom of the 10th at Mike Metheny Field.
Due to the Lone Star Conference's 48-game league schedule, OC had only two openings for nonconference games this season, as the NCAA allows Division II teams to play a maximum of 50 regular-season games. OC (11-22) opted to renew a long-standing nonconference series against Southeastern (22-9), long an Oklahoma small-college power.
OC came out fast with a three-run first inning, with
Blake Empkey driving in a run with a single up the middle and
Coleton Hinkle plating two more with a double down the right-field line.
Michael DiFiore's run-scoring double in the fourth pushed the Eagles' lead to 4-0, as pitcher
Jayce Meyer – making his first start for OC – blanked the Savage Storm during his three-inning stint.
Reid Rice hit a solo home run in the sixth for Southeastern, but the Savage Storm didn't otherwise threaten offensively until the eighth inning. With two outs, a walk and a hit batsman came before a RBI single by Dylan Herd that pulled Southeastern within 5-2. The Eagles then booted two ground balls and Southeastern scored a run on each error.
In the ninth, Southeastern's Damon Burroughs led off with a single and scored on a two-out single by Cameron French.
Southeastern reliever Hayden Alexander (2-1) picked up the pitching win while OC reliever
Ty Dudley (0-1) took the loss.
OC will return to LSC play this weekend with a four-game series at in-state rival Cameron, starting on Friday.
