No. 4 West Texas A&M sweeps doubleheader from Eagles

CANYON, Texas (March 19, 2022) – No. 4 West Texas A&M took an early lead in the first game and rallied in the second to complete a 9-3, 6-4 doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at Wilder Park.

OC (8-19, 8-19 Lone Star Conference) will try to earn a split of its four-game baseball series against LSC and national power West Texas A&M (21-4, 19-4) on Sunday at 11 a.m. The series finale was moved up by two hours to 11 a.m. due to the threat of high wind gusts in the Texas Panhandle in the late afternoon.

Grant Lake led off the opener on Saturday with a home run, but West Texas A&M scored four runs in the first two innings of the opener off OC starter Will Rodman (2-4), the first of five pitchers used by the Eagles. OC trailed the rest of the way as WT starter Nick Marshall (6-0) pitched a complete game, recording five strikeouts.

OC trailed 2-0 in the second game before the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, with Cole Lee delivering an RBI single ahead of a ground-rule double by Chance Westervelt, which scored another run to put the Eagles up 3-2.

But the Buffaloes answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a key error by OC. Will Fuenning's RBI single gave West Texas A&M a 5-3 lead and the Buffaloes extended their advantage to 6-3 in the sixth.

Lee's RBI double with one out in the top of the seventh scored Coleton Hinkle, who had walked, but Lake grounded out and Westervelt struck out against West Texas A&M reliever Colton Charnholm (5-2) to end the game. West Texas A&M starter Jack Eagen struck out 12 Eagles in 4 2/3 innings while Charnholm had five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

OC starter Jacob Mattox (1-2) allowed four hits and four runs in four-plus innings of work.
