OKLAHOMA CITY (March 14, 2022) –
Michael DiFiore's home run started a late-inning rally for Oklahoma Christian, but the Eagles weren't able to finish it off and fell 5-3 to St. Edward's (Texas) on Monday afternoon at Dobson Field in the finale of a four-game baseball series.
St. Edward's (17-7, 17-7 Lone Star Conference) won three of the four games. On Monday, the Hilltoppers built a 4-0 lead before DiFiore hit a two-run homer to left-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull OC (7-17, 7-17) within 4-2.
The Hilltoppers added a key insurance run in the top of the ninth inning when a passed ball on an apparent strikeout with two outs allowed the batter to reach base and a runner to score from third base.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Cole Lee's single to right field scored
Jake LaMar, who had been hit by a pitch ahead of a single by
Coleton Hinkle, to make it 5-3, and the Eagles had two runners on base with two outs. But St. Edward's reliever Jayson Flores finished off his fifth save of the season by retiring
Grant Lake on a game-ending fielders' choice ground ball.
St. Edward's starter Jack Granack (3-2) pitched six innings to earn the win, while OC starter
Jacob Mattox (1-1) took the loss, throwing four innings.
OC will visit No. 3-ranked West Texas A&M for another four-game league series starting on Friday.
