GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 10, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian swimmer
Cheyenne Parks finished 25th in the 400-yard individual medley on Thursday morning in the NCAA Division II Championships at Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Parks, a sophomore from Guthrie, Okla., swam in the last of six heats, putting her among the elite competitors in the event that's considered perhaps the most grueling in the sport. She started quickly and led after the opening butterfly leg and was second after the second, backstroke leg.
She was passed by several swimmers on the breaststroke leg, though, and wasn't able to make up the ground in her freestyle leg, taking sixth in the heat in 4:26.75, about five seconds off her school-record time of 4:21.99. To qualify for the A final, she needed to post a time of 4:21.79 and to make the B final, the cut was 4:24.30.
Parks did beat 16 other swimmers in the 41-woman field.
She has two events left at the national meet, which probably are her two best – the 200 butterfly on Friday and the 200 backstroke on Saturday. She ranks 11th and 21st in Division II, respectively, in those events.
