AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 12, 2022) – Don't look now, but that Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team that some had written off now is on a winning streak heading down the season's homestretch.
Two days after picking up their first win of the 2021-22 campaign, the Lady Eagles picked up their second, a dominating 79-60 decision over St. Edward's (Texas) on Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Athletic Center.
Brooklin Bain and
Ashanti Day each scored 18 points and junior center
Kendall Blackburn added 16 points (going 4 of 5 from 3-point range) as OC (2-18, 2-9 Lone Star Conference) led for more than 31 minutes outscored St. Edward's (11-14, 4-10) in each quarter. OC hit 17 of 20 free throws (85 percent) and outrebounded the Hilltoppers 36-32.
"Once again, I am proud of the resolve of this team," OC coach
Stephanie Findley said. "We are playing more disciplined and playing hard, even though it's our sixth game in 13 days. The girls are shooting great right now and I've always knows if we could just find our shots, we can really play.
"Improvement in our free throws and rebounding were a focus today and we accomplished both of those. We had balanced scoring, the bench contributed at key times and our team chemistry is finally coming together. The girls made the extra pass many times today and it paid off. I just can't say enough about these girls and their resilience and focus. It's not easy to focus at the end of this two-week stretch at the end of a very tough season."
A 3-pointer by Blackburn and a three-point play by Day in the first 72 seconds of the game set the tone for OC and the Lady Eagles led 17-14 after the first quarter. St. Edward's took its biggest lead of the game at 27-21 with 6:06 left in the second quarter, on two free throws by Lauren Catherman, but OC scored the next seven points and never trailed again. The Lady Eagles were up 38-31 at halftime.
The Hilltoppers pulled within 43-41 on a basket by Morgan Gary with 6:40 left in the third quarter, and again, OC responded, going on a 10-2 run. A 3-pointer by Day extended OC's lead to 53-43 at the 2:22 mark of the quarter and the Lady Eagles' lead never shrunk below eight points after that. They laid the hammer down in the fourth quarter, extending their advantage to as many as 21 points.
Blackburn, who hit 6 of her 7 shots overall, had seven rebounds while Day had six rebounds and six assists for OC.
Kate Bradley added 10 points and four assists for the Eagles.
"Kendall really stepped up today and was a big calming factor for us," Findley said. "She was pulling down a lot of rebounds and knocking down threes as we built the lead in the second half."
Taylor Cockerill led St. Edward's with 13 points and Catherman had 10.
OC will return home to play their final two home games next week, on Thursday against Texas-Permian Basin and on Saturday against Angelo State (Texas).
