DENTON, Texas (Jan. 26, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian swimmers
Cheyenne Parks and
Mallory Mead took top honors in combined-events competition as the Eagles faced NCAA Division I North Texas on Wednesday afternoon in a dual at Phol Recreation Center and Peb Natatorium.
Parks, a sophomore from Guthrie, Okla., won the "quadathlon" portion of the meet, in which swimmers each swam a 100-yard butterfly, a 100 backstroke, a 100 breaststroke and a 100 freestyle, then combined the times. Her combined time of 4:09.21 was more than a second faster than that of the runner-up, Angela Ritchie of North Texas.
Parks is one of the top individual medley swimmers – both at 200 and 400 yards – in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which is the closest comparable standard event to the quadathlon. She had times Wednesday of 59.17 seconds in the butterfly, 1:00.70 in the backstroke, 1:13.97 in the breaststroke and 55.37 seconds in the freestyle
OC freshman
Kaylee Ward of Claremore, Okla., took third among the six women entered in the quadathlon with a combined time of 4:16.58.
The Eagles had two swimmers compete in the "triathlon," a combination of times in the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 150 freestyle.
Laura Byars, a freshman from Lubbock, Texas, took third of six women in 2:48.66, while sophomore
Kayci McKinnon of Trophy Club, Texas, finished fourth in 2:54.17.
There also was a triathlon held for backstrokers, who also competed at the 50-, 100- and 150-yard distances. Mead, a sophomore from Timonium, Md., had the top time of the three competitors, finishing in 3:01.62.
Julia Flores, a freshman from Brazil, was third with a time of 3:06.83.
The meet was a late addition to the OC schedule after the Eagles had two meets cancelled earlier this month due to COVID-19 protocols.
