3-point shooting lifts TAMUK past Eagles

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Jan. 22, 2022) – Texas A&M-Kingsville hit 12 3-pointers and committed only seven turnovers, allowing the Javelinas to hold off numerous rallies by Oklahoma Christian on Saturday while downing the Eagles 74-67 at the Steinke Center.

Nyk Madison scored 21 points – just one off his career high – and Drew Tennial posted his second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for OC (6-12, 3-5 Lone Star Conference), which had won its two previous road games.

The Eagles kept it close all the way against TAMUK (10-4, 1-2), which had six players make at least one 3-point shot. Tre Flowers made four and scored 16 points for the Javelinas.

Four times, OC closed what had been a 10-point second-half deficit to within a basket. Two free throws by Moun'Tae Edmundson with 10:30 left pulled the Eagles within 50-48 before a 3-pointer by TAMUK's Sammy Brooks 18 seconds later. A 2-point basket by Madison got OC within 53-50 with 9:14 left, but Jake Majors answered for the Javelinas with another 3-pointer.

OC trailed 58-55 after a fast-break 3-pointer by D.J. Walter with 6:24 left, but TAMUK scored the next six points. The Eagles made a final push and cut their deficit to 64-61 on a dunk by Madison with 2:09 left, but Marcus Jones converted a three-point play for the Javelinas with 1:55 left and OC came no closer the rest of the way.

C.J. Smith scored 15 points for TAMUK, while Edmundson scored 16 points and five assists and Walter had 10 points for OC.
