WT uses offensive rebounding to beat OC

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 2, 2022) – West Texas A&M turned 27 offensive rebounds into 28 second-chance points and the Buffaloes downed Oklahoma Christian 89-68 on Sunday afternoon in the Eagles' Nest.

West Texas A&M (9-7, 2-0 Lone Star Conference) outrebounded OC 60-34 and picked up 23 points from Zamorye Roberts, a transfer from Eastern New Mexico. Junior center Kendall Blackburn matched her career scoring high with 18 points for OC (0-10, 0-2) and also led the Lady Eagles with nine rebounds, while Brooklin Bain overcame early foul trouble to finish with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Kate Bradley, who had 13 points and five assists, gave OC an early 8-6 lead with a 3-pointer with 6:18 left in the first quarter, but that proved to be the Lady Eagles' only successful 3-pointer of the first half. The Buffaloes had three 3-pointers – two by Roberts, who finished 5 of 11 from behind the arc – during an 11-0 run that put them ahead 19-10 late in the quarter.

A basket by Emma Epperly pulled OC within 20-17 two minutes into the second quarter before WT went on a 9-2 run to make it 29-19 and the Buffaloes led 34-27 at halftime. Bain opened the second half with a basket to cut OC's deficit to five points, but WT scored the next nine points and a 3-pointer by Karley Motschenbacher put her team up 42-29. The margin remained in double digits the rest of the game.

The Lady Eagles finished 3 of 26 (11.5 percent) from 3-point range while WT hit 10 of 36 3-point attempts. OC actually shot a higher percentage than did the Buffaloes overall, with the Lady Eagles finishing 22 of 58 (37.9 percent) from the field compared to 29 of 86 (33.7 percent) for WT.

Haylei Janssens (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Alivia Lewis (10 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded a double-double for the Buffaloes.

OC will go on the road for its next three games, all against LSC foes – on Thursday at Eastern New Mexico, on Saturday at No. 1-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) and on Jan. 11 at Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Lady Eagles' next home game will be Jan. 15 against LSC opponent Western New Mexico.
