Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Long 1st-half scoring drought costly for OC in loss to Mustangs

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 15, 2022) – A scoring drought of more than six minutes put Oklahoma Christian in double-digit hole and the Eagles never quite climbed out on Saturday afternoon against Western New Mexico.

Western New Mexico senior Jordan Doss poured in 37 points – the second-highest single-game scoring total this basketball season by a Lone Star Conference men's player – and the Mustangs held off two rallies by OC to down the Eagles 78-62 in the Eagles' Nest.

OC (5-11, 2-4 LSC) had four players score in double figures, with Drew Tennial leading the Eagles with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. But the Eagles didn't have an answer for Doss, who went 14 of 19 from the field, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, and also led the Mustangs with six rebounds.

Doss scored 17 of Western New Mexico's first 19 points. Even so, OC still led 21-19 after Moun'Tae Edmundson (who had seven points and seven assists) hit a 3-pointer at the 11:29 mark of the first half. Western New Mexico then went on a 17-0 run and led 36-21 after Tony Avalos hit three free throws with 5:27 left in the half.

The Eagles responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a basket by Anthony Johnson that pulled OC within 36-33 a minute before halftime. Doss hit another 3-pointer moments later to give the Mustangs a six-point halftime lead.

After Western New Mexico (8-4, 1-1) rebuilt its lead to 10 points, the Eagles twice pulled within five in the second half, the latter time at 53-48 on a basket by Justin Nimmer with 12:06 left. The Mustangs answered with an 8-1 spurt to go up 61-49 with 8:51 left and OC came no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Johnson had 13 points and seven rebounds for OC, with Nimmer scoring 12 points and D.J. Walter adding 10. Avalos scored 17 points and Joshuwan Johnson added 11 for the Mustangs to complement Doss' effort.

The loss was the first for OC in three all-time meetings against Western New Mexico. The teams did not play last season.

OC will be on the LSC road next week, visiting Texas A&M International on Thursday and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday. The Eagles' next home game will be Jan. 27 against Arkansas-Fort Smith.
