OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 24, 2021) – Only time will tell if it will be a moment that propels Oklahoma Christian's fledgling volleyball program to greater heights, but in the short history of the Eagles' team, it certainly will count as one of the highlights.
Down a set and trailing 24-19 in the second set to Texas Woman's, OC reeled off seven straight points to win the set and didn't look back, downing the stunned Pioneers 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-14) in the Eagles' Nest on Friday night in OC's Lone Star Conference home opener.
OC (5-6, 1-2 LSC) snapped a three-match losing streak and figures to have loads of momentum heading into another conference home match on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Dallas Baptist (Texas).
"I'm very happy for the players," OC coach
Jason Skoch said. "We tell them that they are the reason we win. They chose to compete today and they got the rewards."
With an 11-2 run, Texas Woman's (5-7, 1-2) rallied from an early 7-2 deficit in the first set and the Pioneers appeared on their way to a potential sweep, holding five set points in the second set. But the Eagles had other ideas and never gave up on the set.
Two kills by
Caitlynne Hudgens – who had 10 kills and 14 digs – started the OC comeback. After a block by
Talby Duerksen and
Kelsie Schiefelbein resulted in an attack error by the Pioneers, Texas Woman's coach Jeff Huebner called a timeout, but that didn't stop OC's momentum. Duerksen then had consecutive kills to tie the set at 24-24 and another kill by Hudgens put OC ahead.
Huebner called another timeout and challenged Hudgens' kill, but the challenge was overruled and Duerksen finished off the set for OC to even the match.
OC never trailed in the third set, but Texas Woman's tied the score at 23-23 on one of Jessica Freehill's team-high 10 kills.
Morgan Demuth responded with a kill for the Eagles and an attack error by the Pioneers gave OC the set and a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles overwhelmed Texas Woman's in the fourth set, closing on a 12-2 run that started with a kill by
Hannah Rouse and included two aces by Rouse and another by
Brylie Berryman.
Yolaine Lopez's kill finished the set and the match.
Duerksen and Demuth led OC with 14 kills each while Lopez had nine. Demuth posted a ridiculous .667 attack percentage, having no errors on 21 total attacks, and Duerksen's attack percentage was a healthy .353. The Eagles hit .240 as a team.
Kyla Chavez had a double-double with 38 assists and 15 digs, while Berryman recorded a team-high 19 digs and
Alexandra Aponte Torres had 10 digs.
