COMMERCE, Texas (April 3, 2021) – For one half, sixth-seeded Oklahoma Christian looked to be in good position to spring an upset at third-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference women's soccer tournament.
But in the opening minutes of the second half, two corner kicks that resulted in goals less than a minute apart swung the momentum to TAMUC and the Eagles never recovered. The Lions tacked on another late goal to finish off a 3-0 win over OC at the Lion Soccer Field, ending the Eagles' season.
OC (1-8-2) had knocked off TAMUC 1-0 to end the fall 2019 season and led the Lions for a good chunk of the regular-season game between the teams this spring before falling 2-1. But the Eagles weren't able to generate much offense in the rematch, managing only two shots – by
Gracie Cornelius in the 28th minute and
Thalia Delgado in the 65th minute.
TAMUC (4-2) had 18 shots in the game, but OC goalkeeper
Gabby Goddard stonewalled the Lions in the first half, making two of her six saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The Lions earned a corner kick after a save by Goddard in the 47th minute, however, and took a 1-0 lead when Katie Givens scored off an assist from Leslie Campuzano. Less than a minute later, TAMUC's Gracie Spradley lined up another corner kick and this time, Campuzano scored to make it 2-0.
TAMUC added an insurance goal by Skylar Sorrell in the 75th minute. Soon after,
Ashlee Jackson relieved Goddard and played the final 11 minutes.
The Lions' goalkeeper, Jen Peters, wasn't credited with a save.
TAMUC advanced to play either West Texas A&M or Texas Woman's, while OC will enter an offseason that figures to be shorter than usual, should the Eagles return to playing during the fall semester, which they weren't able to do in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule for the fall 2021 season should be announced sometime this summer.
