OKLAHOMA CITY (April 13, 2021) – First came the runs – five of them in a big fifth inning that gave Oklahoma Christian a comfortable lead over Southern Nazarene on Tuesday at Dobson Field.
Then, after SNU batted in the top of the sixth, came the rain – enough of it the nonconference baseball game was called early, giving the Eagles a 7-0 win and a sweep of its two-game season series against its longtime rival.
OC (18-10), ranked eighth in the South Central Region, picked up strong pitching from
Casey Minchey and
Hayden Barber and RBIs from six different players against SNU (5-22).
Minchey (1-0), a sophomore left-hander from Jarrell, Texas, who had pitched only one inning all season, blanked the Crimson Storm for five innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out three batters, never allowing a runner past second base.
Barber followed by finishing the abbreviated shutout, not allowing SNU a hit in the top of the sixth. It was OC's first shutout since winning 3-0 at Texas A&M International on Feb. 26.
SNU starter Kasen Jackson (1-1) took a shutout into the fourth inning, but
Chance Westervelt led off with an infield single, then scored on a triple to left-center field by
Tanner White. White came home on a sacrifice fly by
Errett Edwards, making it 2-0.
The Eagles batted around against Jackson and two relievers in the fifth inning.
Cole Lee and
Kevin Collyar drew walks to open the inning before
Blake Empkey's hustle double scored Lee. Westervelt's sacrifice fly scored Collyar to make it 4-0. White,
Grant Lake and
Jaren Hill later contributed RBI singles.
OC will host No. 25-ranked Texas-Tyler in a three-game Lone Star Conference series that's scheduled to begin Friday.
