LAWTON, Okla. (March 9, 2021) – With a season-best offensive performance, Oklahoma Christian opened a two-game set at Cameron with a decisive win over the Aggies on Tuesday.
Hannah Rouse,
Morgan Demuth and
Caitlynne Hudgens fueled an OC unit that recorded a .305 attack percentage and 43 kills as the Eagles rolled to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-14) win over their Lone Star Conference divisional rival at Aggie Gym.
OC (4-10, 3-8 LSC) moved into third place in the North Division standings, passing Cameron (2-7, 2-7). That's critical because the top three teams in each of the league's four divisions will advance to the postseason tournament. OC will play again Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Cameron, wrapping up the Eagles' LSC schedule, while the Aggies must visit division-leading Arkansas-Fort Smith for two matches next week.
The Eagles have won two of their three matches against Cameron so far this season. An OC win on Wednesday would effectively clinch a third-place divisional finish for the Eagles, while a loss would leave the door open for Cameron to finish third, depending on how tiebreakers fall.
"I was very pleased with the team effort tonight," OC coach
Barry Wheeler said. "The reserves really kept us in the game with their continuous support. I believe that it was one of, if not the best, team hitting percentage on the season, as several players had season-high kill percentages. We are going to have to improve our passing if we want a repeat performance tomorrow night."
Hudgens had 11 kills and 14 digs and a .194 attack percentage. Demuth had nine kills, a block solo and three block assists to go with a sky-high .750 attack percentage, while Rouse had seven kills, four block assists, four digs and a .636 attack percentage. Setters
Spencer Plato (18) and
Jessica Souza (17) both had healthy assist totals.
Cameron, conversely, posted an attack percentage of .067 despite 13 kills from Walia Franklin.
Souza opened the match with an ace and Duerksen and
Allyssa Hamlin followed with kills as OC built leads of 4-0 and 9-1 en route to the 25-11 first-set win. Cameron led the second set 21-19 before the Eagles closed on a 6-1 run that included two kills by Hudgens and a kill and an ace by Plato.
With the score tied 4-4 in the third set, Demuth, Hudgens and Rouse each had a kill and Plato had another ace in a 4-0 spurt that put the Eagles ahead for good. Soon enough, OC led the set 19-8 and the Eagles closed out the set and match with consecutive kills by Demuth and Rouse.
The straight-set win was the second of the season for OC, with both of those coming against Cameron.
