TAMUK downs Eagles to take series

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 7, 2021) – Texas A&M-Kingsville took advantage of the wind blowing out on Sunday afternoon at Dobson Field, hitting four home runs en route to a 14-4 win over Oklahoma Christian in the rubber match of the three-game baseball series.

TAMUK (6-3, 6-3 Lone Star Conference), ranked sixth in the South Central Region, won the final two games against OC (5-5, 4-5) after dropping the series opener. Eight of the Javelinas' 16 hits went for extra bases, with Steven Bonuz hitting two home runs and Seth Spinn and Matthew Castro adding one each.

The Javelinas led 4-1 before Jaren Hill drove in two runs with a two-out single to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning. OC had a chance to take the lead, with runners on second and third base, but TAMUK starter Logan Garza (1-0) retired Cole Lee on a ground ball.

That proved to be the Eagles' last opportunity to go ahead. TAMUK scored five runs in the fifth, two on Bonuz's home run to straightaway center field. Coleton Hinkle's solo home run in the sixth pulled OC within 9-4 before the Javelinas added five more runs in the eighth, with Spinn and Castro each hitting a two-run homer before a solo shot by Bonuz.

The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule. OC starter Julien Ly (1-1) struck out six in 3 2/3 innings while taking the pitching loss. Garza threw 124 pitches for the Javelinas over seven innings and struck out eight OC batters while allowing five hits.

Hinkle and Chance Westervelt each had two hits for the Eagles, but the rest of the lineup managed only one other hit combined.

OC next will visit LSC rival St. Edward's (Texas) for a three-game series that will start on Friday.
