Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

This time, Texas A&M-Commerce rallies to beat Eagles

COMMERCE, Texas (March 3, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian's biggest win in coach Meagan Anderson's tenure came last October, when her Eagles took the lead early in the second half and held on for a 1-0 win over a Texas A&M-Commerce team bound for the Lone Star Conference women's soccer tournament.

For awhile on Wednesday, it looked like the Eagles might duplicate that effort against TAMUC. Natalie Thomas scored in the opening minute to put OC ahead, but the Lions rallied with goals by Leslie Campuzano in the 32nd and 58th minutes to hold off the Eagles 2-1 at the Lion Soccer Field.

TAMUC (2-0, 2-0 Lone Star Conference) nearly scored in the opening seconds, as OC goalkeeper Gabby Goddard dove to save a left-footed shot by Campuzano.

OC (0-3, 0-2) subsequently worked the ball up the field and from just past midfield, in the center of the pitch, Gracie Cornelius sent a pinpoint pass to Thomas. Thomas took one touch near the edge of the penalty box, then shot from about 12 yards out beating TAMUC goalkeeper Jen Peters.

As they did last season, the Lions kept applying offensive pressure to OC, outshooting the Eagles 28-7. In the 32nd minute, Skylar Sorrell found Campuzano, who scored to tie the match. Sorrell nearly put TAMUC ahead in the 40th minute with a shot that bounced off the crossbar.

Sorrell and Katie Givens assisted on Campuzano's second goal. OC managed only two shots after that, one wide and one saved by another TAMUC goalkeeper, Lauren Banning.

Goddard finished with eight saves for OC while Peters and Banning had one save apiece.

OC will visit local rival Central Oklahoma for a nonconference match on Saturday at 7 p.m. before returning to LSC play on March 10 at home against West Texas A&M.
