DENTON, Texas (March 28, 2021) – Limited to two runs in a doubleheader split last season at Texas Woman's, Oklahoma Christian apparently had a point to prove on Sunday afternoon against the Pioneers.
No. 16-ranked OC scored early and often while rolling to a 14-1, 11-2 doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers at Dianne Baker Field. The wins capped a 6-0 week for the Eagles that came on the heels of road doubleheader splits last week against Lone Star Conference foes St. Edward's (Texas) and St. Mary's (Texas) that cost OC eight spots in the NCAA Division II coaches' poll.
OC (23-5, 13-3 LSC) now trails No. 2 Texas A&M-Commerce by only one game for second place in the conference race after TAMUC split doubleheaders this weekend at Lubbock Christian (Texas) and Angelo State (Texas). (No. 6 Texas-Tyler, which leads the LSC race, is not eligible this season for the league tournament.) OC is tied for third with No. 14 Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Eagles rolled up 16 hits in the first game against Texas Woman's (4-17, 3-13) and seized a 3-0 lead in the first inning, with freshman
Kylie Janzen recording the first of what would be four RBIs in the game (and six in the doubleheader).
Brianna Robinson hit her second run-scoring single of the game during a two-run third inning, with
Abi LaValley also contributing an RBI pinch-hit single.
Lindsey Stoeckel and
Aaliyah Brown each had a RBI single in a two-run fifth inning and Janzen's bases-loaded triple fueled a seven-run seventh inning that ended any doubt.
OC pitcher
Kali Crandall (15-1) allowed only two hits and no runs while striking out five batters in six innings of work.
The second game was similar to the first. OC jumped ahead with a six-run second inning, with all the runs coming after Texas Woman's starter Kelsie Briggs (3-11) had recorded two outs.
Brooklin Bain delivered a two-run single to right field and Janzen then drove in two more runs with another single.
Daelyn Denny's pinch-hit, three-run homer in the fourth made it 11-0. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Bailey Turner – who pitched both ends of the doubleheader for the Pioneers in 2020 when they split with OC – now plays for the Eagles. Turner (5-3) shut down her former team, allowing only four hits and two runs while striking out five batters in five innings.
The Eagles will take Easter weekend off before returning to action at home for doubleheaders against LSC foes Eastern New Mexico on April 9 and No. 10 West Texas A&M on April 11.
