OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 3, 2021) – After rallying from a two-set deficit to force a fifth set on Wednesday night, Oklahoma Christian seemingly had all the momentum, but a late push by Cameron gave the Aggies the win.
Cameron scored eight of the volleyball match's final nine points to down OC 3-2 (26-24, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8) and give the Aggies a split of their two matches this week in the Eagles' Nest.
OC (2-3, 1-3 Lone Star Conference) was led by
Hannah Rouse, who had 13 kills, and
Morgan Demuth, who posted a stellar .417 hitting percentage to go with 11 kills, five block assists and three digs.
Caitlynne Hudgens (15),
Jessica Souza (15) and
Allyssa Hamlin (12) all recorded double-digit digs, with Hudgens and Hamlin each recording seven kills.
The Eagles had trouble stopping Cameron's top hitters, Walia Franklin (17 kills) and Alanni Carter (14 kills, 23 digs), particularly as the Aggies built a two-set lead. The first set was tied 24-24 before Cameron (1-1, 1-1) took advantage of two OC errors to win the set and the Aggies rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to take the second set.
OC had runs of five, four and six points in the third set before prevailing 25-18 on a kill by
Kyla Chavez off a Souza assist.
Behind
Spencer Plato's serve, the Eagles jumped to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. Cameron rallied to go ahead 22-19 before a kill by Hamlin, an ace by Souza and a Cameron attack error tied the set. Cameron won the next point by OC took the final three, with Chavez again with the clinching kill, this time off an assist from
Karlee Alonzo.
The fifth set was tied 7-7 before the Aggies went on their match-clinching run, during which they had four kills, two by Arianna Navarrete, who finished with 12 kills.
It was the third five-set match this season for the Eagles, who previously won one at Southwestern Oklahoma State before dropping another to Midwestern State (Texas).
The Eagles will play two matches at LSC rival Arkansas-Fort Smith next Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home for a Feb. 17 nonconference match against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
