WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Feb. 24, 2021) – A day after Oklahoma Christian rallied from down two sets and a match point to beat Midwestern State (Texas), the Mustangs made sure there would be no dramatics in the rematch on Wednesday.
Midwestern State seized control early and downed the Eagles in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) sweep at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. OC held only three leads in any set during the volleyball match, all three by only one point.
OC (3-7, 2-6 Lone Star Conference) managed only a .062 attack percentage and only two Eagles –
Talby Duerksen with eight and
Allyssa Hamlin with seven – managed more than five kills.
Jessica Souza had 18 assists and seven digs for the Eagles while
Alexandra Aponte Torres had 13 digs.
Midwestern State (5-3, 5-3) had a balanced attack, with Taylor Anderson leading the way with eight kills.
OC scored the match's first point but the Mustangs had the next six and soon extended their lead to 16-4 before eventually prevailing 25-17. OC led 5-4 in the second set before the Mustangs went on a 5-1 run and never looked back before prevailing 25-19.
The Eagles led 4-3 in the third set but Midwestern State scored the next six points. OC did pull even at 17-17 on a block assist by Hamlin and
Morgan Demuth, but the Mustangs recorded kills on the next two points and never let OC tie the set again.
OC will return home for a nonconference match Sunday against local rival Central Oklahoma before hosting LSC power Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday and Wednesday.
