3-point shooting lifts Bison past OC

OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 7, 2021) -- Oklahoma Baptist shot 55.6 percent from 3-point range and held off a third-quarter rally by Oklahoma Christian before pulling away for an 85-58 win over the Lady Eagles on Tuesday in a nonconference basketball game in the Eagles' Nest.

Freshman Kate Bradley had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead OC, while Kendall Blackburn added 14 points and Natalie Smith added 11 points and eight rebounds, posting collegiate highs in both statistical categories. But OC (0-6) shot 31.3 percent (21 of 67) from the field, fell into an early hole and never led against its longtime rival.

OBU (5-3), which competes in the Great American Conference, went 15 of 27 from behind the arc, matching its highest total for made 3-pointers since that school moved into the NCAA Division II ranks with the 2014-15 season.

Mallory Lockhart, who set a single-season Oklahoma City University record with 117 3-pointers last season before transferring to OBU, went 6 of 10 from 3-point range and scored 20 points. Jaylin Stapleton hit 4 of 8 3-pointers and scored 12 points, while Kendall Parker made 3 of 4 from behind the arc and finished with nine points.

OC trailed 46-25 early in the second half before a Blackburn-fueled rally. The junior center hit consecutive 3-pointers, then two free throws during a 12-3 run by the Lady Eagles. After Bradley's driving layup with 4:33 left in the third quarter, OC trailed only 49-36.

But Lockhart hit two 3-pointers and Parker added another for the Bison as they rebuilt their lead to 58-38 and the Lady Eagles never made another push.

A bright spot for OC was the play of Smith, a freshman forward from Lawton who saw 21 minutes of action and went 4 of 6 from the field, including her first collegiate 3-pointer. Another freshman, Atlanta Hopgood, grabbed a career-high five rebounds. The Lady Eagles committed a season-low 13 turnovers and matched OBU on the boards, with each team recording 37 rebounds.

OC will play a mandated nonconference game at Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at 2 p.m. TAMUC is ranked No. 3 nationally in the Division II Sports Information Directors Association Media Poll and No. 5 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll. The Lady Eagles' next home game will be Dec. 31 against Cameron, which will be OC's official LSC opener.
