OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 4, 2021) -- Oklahoma Christian posted its top shooting performance of the young season on Saturday, but the way Dallas Baptist (Texas) shot the basketball, the Eagles constantly fought the proverbial uphill battle.
Dallas Baptist threatened the Lone Star Conference single-game field-goal percentage record for a time and eventually finished at 60.4 percent (32 of 53) from the field, allowing them to hold off OC 86-72 in a nonconference game in the Eagles' Nest.
OC (2-5) shot a strong 54.7 percent (29 of 53) from the field, including 8 of 14 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range. Center
Hunter Staten made 6 of 7 shots, including two 3-pointers, to finish with a career-high 14 points and four other Eagles scored in double figures.
Despite that, the Eagles fell into a double-digit hole as Dallas Baptist (5-2) hit 17 of 23 shots – 73.9 percent – in the first half. For perspective, the LSC single-game record, which has stood since 1983, is 73.7 percent. The Patriots cooled off a little bit in the second half, shooting 50 percent (15 of 30), but OC never came closer than eight points.
Carson Hughes led DBU with 24 points, hitting 8 of 12 shots and all eight of his free throws. Sophomore sharpshooter Ricky Lujan scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Patriots, who committed only seven turnovers.
A 3-pointer by
Moun'Tae Edmundson gave OC a 10-8 lead at the 14:20 mark of the first half before the Patriots seized control with an 11-0 run. Consecutive 3-pointers by freshman
Calaway Dykes pulled the Eagles within 24-20 with 6:19 left in the first half before DBU rebuilt its advantage to 42-32 by halftime.
OC remained within striking distance at 69-60 with 4:33 left after another basket by Edmundson – who scored 12 points – but the Patriots scored the next five points to essentially seal the win.
Nyk Madison went 5 of 10 from the field and scored 11 points for OC, while
D.J. Walter had 10 points and seven rebounds and
Drew Tennial had 10 points. For DBU, Cameron Kahn and William Heather each scored 10 points.
The win allowed DBU to take a 22-21 lead over OC in the overall series between the programs, which dates back to January 1975.
OC will play another mandated nonconference game against a LSC opponent next Saturday, when the Eagles will visit Texas A&M-Commerce. The Eagles' next home game will be against York (Neb.) on Dec. 16.
