Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Steady Eagles dispatch York in nonconference game

OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 16, 2021) – The last time Oklahoma Christian hosted York (Neb.) in a regular-season basketball game, current OC coach Kendre Talley – then a senior point guard – recorded one of only three triple-doubles in program history for the Eagles.

That was in November 2013. His team wasn't quite as flashy on Thursday night against York, but the Eagles were steady, and that was more than enough. OC built a double-digit lead midway through the first half and stayed in control the rest of the way while dispatching the Panthers 75-60 in a nonconference game in the Eagles' Nest.

Three players flirted with double-doubles for OC (3-6). Guard Moun'Tae Edmundson had 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting), a career-high eight rebounds and four assists. Swingman Drew Tennial had 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals and forward Nyk Madison finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded York 47-31 and limited the Panthers to only one offensive rebound.

York (4-11), a NAIA program playing the game as an exhibition, had only one player score in double figures – Salvador Fernandez, who had 12 points. The Panthers missed their first 11 3-point attempts and shot 37.3 percent (23 of 61) from the field, compared to 45.2 percent (28 of 62) for OC.

York's final lead came at 6-5 on a layup by Keyaun Hoskin four minutes into the game. The Panthers didn't score again for nearly seven minutes and an 11-0 run by OC put the Eagles up 16-6. York did pull within seven points twice, but D.J. Walter hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for OC to give the Eagles a 35-24 lead.

A 3-pointer by Tennial 74 seconds into the second half pushed OC's advantage to 16 points and York never really recovered. The Panthers came within 64-54 with 5:38 left on Myson Huff's 3-pointer, but Talley called a timeout and the Eagles responded with a game-sealing 11-0 run.

Center Hunter Staten added 12 points and seven rebounds for OC, while Walter scored nine points on 3-of-6 3-point shooting. OC moved to 10-1 all-time against York in regular-season games.

OC will travel to play Lone Star Conference rival (and No. 25-ranked) Texas-Tyler in a mandated nonconference game on Saturday. The Eagles' next home game will be their LSC opener, against Cameron on Dec. 31.
