Rouse fuels monumental rally as OC keeps postseason hopes alive

LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 6, 2021) – Down two sets and a match point to Cameron on Saturday afternoon, Oklahoma Christian's postseason hopes hung by the proverbial string. But OC managed to survive and – ever so slowly – climb its way to safety.

Now, after a dramatic 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-11) win in the Aggie Gym, OC will enter the final week of the season with a chance to make the Lone Star Conference volleyball tournament.

Outside hitter Hannah Rouse played perhaps the finest match in her two seasons with the Eagles, recording five kills in a match-ending 8-0 run after OC fell behind 11-7 in the final set. She led her team with 17 kills and a career-high 23 digs as the Eagles completed their first-ever LSC weekend road sweep, following a 3-0 win on Friday at Midwestern State (Texas).

OC (9-17, 5-10 LSC) is tied with Texas Woman's for 13th place in the LSC, one game behind Eastern New Mexico. The top 12 teams in the regular-season standings will make the LSC tournament. OC has home matches next Friday against Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-8, 7-8) and Texas A&M International (4-18, 4-11) and the Eagles will likely need to win both to extend their season.

Cameron (2-26, 1-15) outhit OC .159 to .146 and the Aggies jetted to a quick lead behind Arianna Navarrette (20 kills, 17 digs) and Anjolie Navarrette (18 kills, 12 digs). The Aggies led all the way in the first set and used a 7-0 run early in the second set to erase an early deficit. OC did lead 20-18 and 23-22 late in the set before the Aggies scored the final three points.

From the midway point of the third set, with OC up 13-12, the teams weren't separated by more than a point. Cameron eased ahead 24-23 and had a match point, but Arianna Navarrette committed an attack error to open the door for OC. A kill by Allyssa Hamlin then gave the Eagles a set point, which they converted when Anjolie Navarrette committed an attack error.

Given new life, OC had to rally again in the fourth set. Trailing 21-17, Rouse had two kills and Kelsie Schiefelbein had another during a 5-0 run by the Eagles. With the set tied 23-23, a Schiefelbein kill put OC ahead and a Hamlin kill tied the match.

OC trailed 11-7 in the final set before the final comeback, fueled by Rouse. Setter Spencer Plato assisted on each of Rouse's kills during the run and finished with 34 assists and nine digs. Hamlin, like Rouse, also had a double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 26 digs. Brylie Berryman added 21 digs for the Eagles.

OC now is 4-1 against Cameron during the first two seasons of the Eagles' revived program. The last three of those wins have come on Cameron's home floor.
