EDMOND, Okla. (Nov. 13, 2021) – After coming oh-so-close two seasons ago,
Cheyenne Parks seems destined to swim this season in the NCAA Division II Championship meet, and the Oklahoma Christian swimmer could be competing in multiple events.
Parks recorded a Division II B qualifying time and broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday night in the final session of the Eagle Invitational at the Mitch Park YMCA pool, increasing to four the number of events in which she's met the Division II B standard.
OC also finished the meet with another school record in the 400 freestyle relay and won that event as well as the 100 freestyle, in which sophomore
Hope Hill prevailed. The Eagles cruised to the title in the four-team meet with 1,181.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) with 903. Texas-Permian Basin was third with 568.5 points and Barton (Kan.) Community College was fourth with 478.
Parks, a sophomore from Guthrie, already had posted Division II B-cut times in the 500 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley on the meet's first two days. To that list she added the 200 backstroke on Saturday, breaking her own school record with a time of 2:00.83, well within the NCAA standard of 2:02.88. It was the fourth-fastest time this season by a Division II swimmer in the event, according to the website collegeswimming.com.
Her previous school record in the event was 2:01.38, set during the 2019 Trinity Tiger Invitational in San Antonio. On Saturday, Parks' teammate, sophomore
Mallory Mead of Timonium, Md., finished third in 2:07.88.
Hill, from Santa Clarita, Calif., was OC's other individual winner, holding off a challenge from her teammate, second-year freshman
Olivia Rollen of Edmond to prevail in 53.05 seconds. Rollen finished in 53.55 seconds.
Rollen, freshman
Laura Byars of Lubbock, Texas, Hill and sophomore
Kayci McKinnon of Trophy Club, Texas, combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:32.95, another school record. The old mark of 3:33.78 was set at the 2020 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships by Hill, Hanna Forbat,
Brenda Mendes and
Jamie McGarrigle.
Mead (17:43.96) and McKinnon (17:50.00) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle.
The Eagles now will have an extended break before resuming their season on Jan. 7-8 in San Antonio with a pair of duals meets at Trinity (Texas) and NCAA Division I Incarnate Word, respectively.
