Eagles’ upset bid at Midwestern State thwarted by penalty kick

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 9, 2021) – Less than five minutes from securing their second result (and possibly their second win) against No. 11-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) in as many seasons, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles fell in a quite frustrating fashion on Saturday at Stang Park.

A handball call went against the Eagles and gave Midwestern State a penalty kick in the second overtime, and Mere Escobar buried it to give the Mustangs a 3-2 win over OC in the Lone Star Conference opener for both men's soccer teams.

It was a heartbreaking end to a spirited upset bid by OC (1-5-2, 0-1 LSC), which beat Midwestern State (9-1, 1-0) for the first time in the spring 2021 season and lost by only a 2-1 margin last Saturday, when the Eagles hosted the Mustangs in a nonconference game.

OC outshot the Mustangs 21-14 and freshman John Osadolor Ighede broke a scoreless tie in the 48th minute, taking an assist from Miguel Fonseca and right-footing the ball past Midwestern State goalkeeper Marc-Antoine Huzen.

Escobar tied the game in the 60th minute, off an assist from Julian Bajaras, then went ahead in the 62nd minute on a goal by Trevor Amman. But OC kept pressing for an equalizer and it came in the 87th minute, when Ighede scored off an assist from Michele Perina.

It appeared the game would end in a draw until the 106th minute, when Midwestern State was awarded the penalty kick.

Huzen made four saves for the Mustangs, while goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet had three for OC.

After three straight one-goal losses to ranked opponents, the Eagles will face unranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) at home on Wednesday.
