OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 13, 2021) – After two goals in the first seven minutes of the match between Oklahoma Christian and Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Wednesday night, it seemed a shootout might be in store.
Instead, the game settled into a grind, and OC loves to grind. The Eagles – who fell 2-0 in Lubbock three weeks ago – changed that result, earning a 1-1 draw with the Chaparrals at the Eagle Soccer Field in a match that started and ended in the rain.
OC (1-5-3, 0-1-1 Lone Star Conference) gained traction as the game wore on, outshooting Lubbock Christian (4-4-1, 1-0-1) by a 14-9 count after halftime and 18-16 overall. The match proved chippy, as OC received five yellow cards while the Chaparrals had two yellows and a red card (issued to Jacopo Ghezzi), giving OC a man advantage for the final 29½ minutes of action.
Tomas Casas scored for Lubbock Christian in the sixth minute, and in the seventh minute,
John Osadolor Ighede answered for OC to tie the game. That proved to be all the scoring, but both teams had their chances. Tariq Bakkali hit the left post for Lubbock Christian in the 14th minute and Casas did the same in the 52nd minute. Ighede had a shot hit the right post in the 55th minute.
Lubbock Christian goalkeeper Braxton Thorne made four saves, while his OC counterpart,
Anthony Trabichet, made five stops, a couple of the spectacular variety – the biggest coming on a penalty kick by Lubbock Christian's Fernando Flores in the 69th minute.
Eleven different OC players recorded at least one shot.
OC will visit LSC rival Texas-Tyler on Saturday in a game that will count in the league standings. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw in a nonconference game at OC in the season opener on Sept. 4.
