No. 12 Midwestern State holds off OC rally

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 2, 2021) – Given new life from a late penalty-kick goal, Oklahoma Christian pressed for an equalizer on Saturday night against No. 12-ranked Midwestern State (Texas), but the Eagles simply ran out of time.

Midwestern State seized control with an early goal and made life difficult for the Eagles most of the rest of the way while grinding out a 2-1 win over OC in a nonconference game at the Eagle Soccer Field.

During the spring season, OC stunned the Mustangs 2-1, the Eagles' first win over Midwestern State in 18 matches dating back to 1988. Midwestern State wanted to avoid a repeat on Saturday and the Mustangs struck quickly, in the eighth minute. OC goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet saved a shot by James Doyle, but the rebound went to Trevor Amann, who put Midwestern State ahead.

Midwestern State (8-1) made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute on a goal by Julian Barajas, who scored from just inside the penalty box. The Mustangs outshot OC 19-7 and limited the Eagles' scoring chances.

But in the 87th minute, Midwestern State's Nathan Toledo committed a foul just inside the penalty box and OC was awarded a penalty kick. Michele Perina went right and beat goalkeeper Marc-Antoine Huzen to put the Eagles right back in the game.

OC (1-4-2) had a couple of scoring chances before time expired but proved unable to get off a potential tying shot.

Huzen finished with two saves for Midwestern State while Trabichet had four for OC.

OC will visit Midwestern State next Saturday in what will be the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. It also will be the Eagles' third straight game against a ranked opponent, as OC fell 2-1 in overtime at No. 3 West Texas A&M on Wednesday.
