SAN ANGELO, Texas (Jan. 4, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian shot 39 percent from the field, fell behind early and never caught up, losing 92-72 to Angelo State (Texas) on Monday afternoon at the Junell Center.
Sam Moore scored 19 points for Angelo State (3-3, 3-3 Lone Star Conference), which led by double digits for the final 16 minutes while finishing a sweep of the two-game series against OC (0-4, 0-4).
The ragged game featured 48 fouls – 22 on OC, 26 on Angelo State – which meant a lot of free throws. Both teams struggled from the line, with Angelo State making 24 of 36 (66.7 percent) and the Eagles just 21 of 41 (51.2 percent). The Eagles connected on just 23 of 59 shots from the field and Angelo State outrebounded OC 51-38, led by Lavaris Duncan (12 rebounds) and Devaughn Thomas (10 rebounds).
OC led only once – at 3-2, after the Eagles' opening basket, a 3-pointer by
Marco Foster. He led OC with 19 points.
Moore hit three 3-pointers in the first 6½ minutes to stake the Rams to their early lead. OC cut what had been a 12-point first-half lead to three points on two occasions, the last time at 34-31 on another 3-pointer by Foster with 4:30 left in the half, before Angelo State rebuilt its advantage to 48-39 by halftime.
A put-back basket by sophomore center
Hunter Staten – who posted career highs in points (12) and rebounds (eight) – with 17:12 left pulled the Eagles within 52-46 with 17:12 left, but Angelo State scored the next 14 points and led 66-46 with 13:21 left.
Two free throws by Staten with 3:18 left cut OC's deficit to 84-71, but the Eagles scored only one point the rest of the way.
D.J. Walter added 12 points and seven rebounds while
Elijah Elliott had 10 points for OC.
The Eagles are scheduled to host in-state rival Cameron on Thursday before traveling to play the Aggies in Lawton, Okla., on Saturday.
