LAREDO, Texas (Jan. 19, 2021) – Maybe all Oklahoma Christian needs is an extra five minutes of basketball.
For the second time this season, the Eagles picked up a dramatic road win in overtime, riding clutch 3-pointers by
Anthony Johnson and
D.J. Walter to a 79-70 win over Texas A&M International on Tuesday afternoon at the Kinesiology and Convocation Center. The win gave OC a split of a pair of games in their visit to TAMIU.
Freshman
Nyk Madison scored the tying basket on a follow shot with 1.2 seconds left in regulation that rolled around the rim and dropped in for OC (2-8, 2-8 Lone Star Conference). In the extra period, it was all Eagles, as they outscored TAMIU 11-2 and didn't allow the Dustdevils a basket.
Johnson, a senior guard from Jackson, Miss., scored a career-high 23 points, hitting 7 of 11 shots, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range. He also had four steals and four assists.
Freshman
Elijah Elliott had 17 points and six assists and Madison added 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for OC. Both fouled out in overtime, joining teammate
Donovan Reagan, who had fouled out during regulation. Walter spent much of the game in foul trouble and finished with four.
TAMIU (1-9, 1-7) didn't take advantage, however, making only 16 of 27 free throws (59.3 percent), compared to 20 of 26 (76.9 percent) for the Eagles.
The seesaw game included 11 lead changes, eight of those in the final 5:25 of regulation and overtime. OC led 64-60 after a 3-pointer by Walter with 1:55 left in regulation, but a quick 7-2 spurt by the Dustdevils – capped by a 14-foot jumper by Matija Novkovic with 42 seconds left – gave them a 67-66 lead.
The Eagles came up empty on their next two possessions, but fouled Tyrese Davis after both misses. Davis made only one of two free throws with 20.7 seconds left and missed a pair with 8.8 seconds left, providing an opening for OC. Elliott's driving layup attempt missed, but Madison corralled the loose ball and scored to force overtime.
OC's first two OT possessions ended with a 3-pointer (by Johnson and Walter, respectively) and Madison followed with a dunk off a nifty pass from Elliott to make it 76-68 with 3:15 left. TAMIU missed all six of its shots in the extra period. Johnson capped the scoring for OC with a traditional three-point play with 1:51 left, extending the Eagles' lead to 79-69.
Freshman guard Anthony Scott had 22 points, seven assists and five steals to lead the Dustdevils, while Novkovic added 17 points.
OC's next game won't be until Jan. 28, when they are scheduled to face Arkansas-Fort Smith in Fort Smith, Ark. The Eagles are scheduled to host UAFS two days later.
